The October 2005 Pakistan earthquake not only left thousands of men, women and children injured, it caused severe damage to the educational infrastructure in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Pakistan-administered Kashmir (AJK). Hundreds of students and teachers were deceased and injured. In District Mansehra and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, 67% of the institutions were destroyed or severely damaged. Similarly, over 83% of the educational institutes were severely damaged in Mansehra & AJK.
Friends Pakistan in the partnership of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Japan through KnK Japan and Government’s line departments had initiated a School Reconstruction & Rehabilitation Program in 2010 to strengthen educational system through infrastructural development support in earthquake affected areas of District Mansehra and AJK. In this respect, Fifty Three (53) permanent school buildings (primary, middle & high) including boys & girls schools in compliance to approved seismic standards of ERRA & NESPAK have been completed and handed over to respective Education Departments of KPK and AJ&K. Currently, construction work on seven more schools is in progress in AJ&K and these schools will be handed over to concerned education departments in 2016.
Along with the Construction of School Building, Friends Pakistan also provide the requisite facilities in new building which includes students furniture, boundary wall, toilet block, water & sanitation and training of school players (Teachers, PTCs & SRCs).
